Tags are a powerful mechanism for organizing contacts on LinkedIn. Classifying people into different [and sometimes multiple] categories can help you stay in touch with your connections in more meaningful ways.
LinkedIn provides you with a few Tag categories such as colleague, friend, classmate, and partners. To these you may want to add several others such as, Clients, Prospects, Suspects, Competitors, Investor, etc.
In addition, you can set up a simple system for knowing whom you need to re-connect or follow up with for marketing, promotion, career advancement, sales, etc. It’s very easy, simply set up Tags for each month of the year (e.g., Jan, Feb …) and tag your connections by the month you want to contact or re-contact them.
Use the notes function to state why you want to contact them and/or what your next objective is for working with this contact. If you keep notes on previous contacts it will help track your activities with each person.
If you are not connecting with a purpose than none of this matters, but if you want to use your contacts rather than creating a phone book than organizing your connections is critical.
